How I Overcame my Fear of Fat

In 2015 I qualified to run the 2017 Boston Marathon! I had taken up running in 2009 and what i considered, at the time, a healthy diet and had dropped approx. 40lbs. I felt amazing. I thought i was doing everything right. My “healthy diet” was very typical of a runner, LOW-fat, high-carb, goos and gels, jelly beans, gummy bears, ect. When I wasn’t running I ate a lot of salads and chicken breast—I even bought fat-free sour cream, fat-free cream cheese and fat-free cheese (Is it really cheese? And yes, such a product exists…scary!) My daily fat intake was roughly 20 grams. I had such a deep ingrained fat fear, and did not want to gain any weight, because we have been told “fat makes us fat.” I took that to heart! I was always hungry and miserable! I began binge eating on every fatty carb I could find, then restricting, along with running miles and miles…it became an ugly cycle.

By November 2016 i was shot. I got out of bed and wanted to climb back in. My hair was falling out, I had no desire for anything. I went to my doctor and his exact words were “I dont know what to do with you” this was said following seeing my thyroid panel results. He then proceeded to call the specialist in SLC and ordered a brain MRI, he wanted to see my pituitary gland.

I ended up running the Boston Marathon completely fat fueled, with a time of 3:53. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my LIFE!

Being ranchers we genuinely have the worst self purchased health insurance you could imagine, so I began thinking, “Clearly what I’m doing nutritionally is not working. Lets do the exact opposite.” I had previously heard of the ketogenic diet, but had written it off very quickly as something I could do, or would NEVER do, but considering my health situation, I went for it…

The rest, as they say, is history. Within a few weeks my energy was back, I began running again, and I only had a few months before Boston in April. I had planned to walk it if needed, but ended up running it completely fat fueled in 3:53. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my LIFE!! The ketogenic lifestyle truly changed my life. I am off all thyroid medication (I was taking since 2009 125mmg of thyroid replacement) and my labs are stellar! I went back to school to become a Certified Holistic Nutritionist to help others change their lives as well!
