Our well-intentioned brain sometimes goes overboard in its effort to keep us alive and well. Often times our brains would like to do the exact thing today as we did yesterday, mainly because we "survived." Therefore it makes logical sense to repeat yesterday's same thoughts, habits, activities, emotions, and experiences. This process clearly ingrains ruts in our brains, leading to habits that are very hard to break. We sometimes repeat good habits, but all too often we feel stuck with bad habits that seem overwhelming and impossible to overcome. We condemn ourselves for lacking willpower, but the irony is that we're trying to get our brain to tell our brain what to do (read that last sentence again). This neural loop leads us only to discouragement, guilt, and deeper ruts.
Body-to-brain activities help to train our brain to break away from those ruts and to shine the light on willpower's faulty wiring. By leading out with a few well-balanced actions and activities, our bodies can show our brains that we're capable of bigger and better experiences—different experiences. Ultimately we want our bodies and brains on the same path, but we have the capacity to steer that path, even if just a little bit at a time. We call this Wellpower!
